Sheriff Officers are restricted to serving documents within working hours. That is laid down by statute. However, they can leave documents when the person isn't there as long as it can be established that the person lives at the particular address. There should be no requirement for the person to be in at the time. Precisely what are they trying to serve and why is there a problem? The only thing that has to be served person to person is a bankruptcy petition and it doesn't appear you're at that stage yet. Happy to discuss further. If the sheriff officers establish that he lives there it can be put through the door, yes.
