Model number? Example 345213-0123-B1. Is it electric start? Does it turn easily or comes to top and hardly will turn, have to help it past TDC?? Good battery, cables and starter? Will engine spin freely with spark plug out? Will it run at all? Or it could be out of time, the flywheel key may be stripped?

You did not give me model number. Some of the Briggs overhead valve engines, have a compression release that is on the back side of the camshaft gear, if this spring loaded weight breaks, teh compression release will not work., Can you check compression on the engien? If compression is 100 psi or more, the compression release is not working. The only way to repair compression release is to replace the camshaft. On other Briggs engines, the valves can need adjustment, set valves at .003 on intake and .005 inch on exhaust and see it it helps.
