17.5hp B&S engine hard to start compression is too high for the starter turn ,new starter and battery fitted

Check the valve adjustment, should be .003 to .005 on intake and .005 to .007 on exhaust. If valves are ok, get the model number and we need to look at the camshaft, on some Briggs models, there is a compression release on the back side of the camshaft gear, and if the spring or weight breaks you will have no compression release! The only solution is to replace the camshaft!
