I am sorry to hear that you are having this issue.
Which mode do you have the camera in?
The zoom does not work in all of the modes, such as Panorama,etc..
Go to camera then settings and then shooting mode, let me know which mode it is in.

its in auto mode but it will not work in all the modes ive tryed going into the camera no joy it will let me into the camera but thats all

okay, this sounds like there may be a glitch in the firmware. Do you have the phone contacts and data backed up to google?

yes they are . what you got in mind can you take the phone over

The best option will be to do a factory restore and the you can restore the contacts.

  • With the handset turned off, press and hold the Volume Up key.
  • Note: To turn the handset off completely, remove and reinsert the battery.
  • While holding down the Volume Up key, press and hold the Home key.
  • With both the Volume Up key and the Home key held down, press and hold the Powerkey.

     

    • Release all three keys when the Samsung logo appears.
    • Press the Volume Down key to scroll to wipe data/factory reset.
  • With wipe data/factory reset highlighted, press the Power key.
  • Press the Volume Down key to scroll to Yes --delete all user data
    With Yes --delete all user data highlighted, press the Power key.
  • Once the wipe is complete, press the Power key to select reboot system now
    The master reset is now complete. The handset will restart
