I have a problem with my computer autosaving files even thought

Customer Question

I have a problem with my computer autosaving files even thought I have disabled this option. Everytime I diminish or close a view that I have simply viewed, excel updates it. We use dropbox in this office so need to view files simultaneously all the time but this problem is creating conflicting copies. I have been able to turn this off on 2 other computers.

Thank you for your question, my name is Richard.

Can you tell me which version of office you are using please?

Thank you
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

2010

Thanks

To confirm, you disable it in Excel by going to File >> Options

Go to Save

uncheck all Auto Save options listed there.

Save this and it stops Excel from Auto Saving.

Have you done this yet Annie?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

I have done all of this already

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
ok, then it is not auto saving.

To confirm, you are all in Dropbox, working on the one file at the same time correct?

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

not working in most cases, just viewing with no changes made but yes in dropbox

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
Ok, you cannot do that in Dropbox, it is dropbox thats the issue, not Excel.

You can only have one person work on the file at one time. This is the case for all files, and is the case for all file systems.

The reason is, there is no way to merge changes to an opened copy.

so for instance, two people have Excel open. Person A changes a value and saves, but Person B has it also opened, and when they make a change, the changes from the first person will not be there or changed, and are overwritten, which is why you would get conflict versions.

excel is not developed to allow multiple people to work on one file at the same time.

This is what a Database such as Microsoft Access is for, as it deals with record level lockings.

But the problem is you having multiple people at once working on one file, which you cannot do within excel Annie.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

I understand that all but I can open a file, close it again and immediately its saved and my colleagues can do the same. NO changes are being made, the file is simply being opened.

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
Yes, it is always going to make an update to indicate it has been opened.

It updates the Access Date on this which you can see by right clicking the files and select properties.

This is windows doing this which cannot be disabled.

it hasnt always been this way as we have been using dropbox for a few years and its worse now than ever.

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
explain exactly in detail what is happening in the process where it goes wrong.
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

on 2 computers, everytime an excel file ( doesn't happen on word etc) is opened, it is autosaved somewhere in the system. On one computer this does not happen. the two computers that it applies to are running office 2010 and the one where it doesnt happen is 2007

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
ok, do you have another 2010 computer there where the problem does not happen?

Also, is the file a 2007 or 2010 file?

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

no we dont have another where its not happening and the files are all 1997-2003

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
ok, save the file as a 2010 file.

Then tell me if you have the problem just between the 2010 computers please.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

i do, only the 2010 computers are doing it.

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
ok, so you saved the file as a 2010 Excel file.

Opened it on one computer.

Closed it

Opened it on the other 2010 computer and it still gave you a conflict problem?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

yup

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
Make a new folder and copy the file there.

then repeat the open close process and tell me if it still does this please.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

ok tried that and it did the same thing

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
Can you make a blank Excel file, with nothing in it and save this.

Does it happen with this blank file?
