Customer Question

I have bought an old game I loved playing when I was younger. The game is about 11-12 year old. I have got Windows 8 it installed no problem but when I click to play the game it loads up and then just goes back to desktop. I have had the game open but in a very small screen and it wouldn't let me adjust it. Please help I am wanting to revisit my past here.CheersChris.

Hi Chris, my name is ***** ***** and welcome to JustAnswer!

It sounds like you might be running into some compatibility issues here. If the game is that old, the truth is that it may just never run correctly under Windows 8. But before I make any official pronouncements, can you tell me how you're installing the game? Did you install from CD?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Yeah from cd
Expert:  ChrisC replied 4 months ago.

Okay, so when you bring the game up, it DOES actually play, you just can't adjust the window size, is that right? How big is the window?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Sometimes it plays sometimes it just jumps back into desktop and the screen is very small top left corner
Expert:  ChrisC replied 4 months ago.

Okay, what's the name of the game? And do you know what version of Windows it was originally designed for?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Star Trek armada and it looks like 95/98 from back of case
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I've got another game from same time as that was made and it works no bother
Expert:  ChrisC replied 4 months ago.

Okay, wow. You're going to have a hard time with that one. Almost no software from that era works properly with Windows 8 or later.

Give me just a minute to take a look at some things for you. Stand by please.

Ok thanks

Okay, Chris I took a look at some things and it looks like you're not the only one facing this issue.

If you're interested, here are a couple of discussions where people are talking about the same problem:

http://www.fleetops.net/forums/armada/armada-1-and-2-crashes-in-windows-8-12199

https://www.reddit.com/r/Treknobabble/comments/29v7wp/is_there_a_way_to_get_armada_to_work_on_windows_8/

I was reading quickly, but from what I could tell the best solution anyone came up with was to run a virtual machine with an older version of Windows installed, but that's not really a practical solution for most people. You can read through the discussions yourself to get a better understanding of the issue.

The simple fact of the matter, unfortunately, is that games that old--or any software really--just does not run well under modern versions of the Windows. The backwards compatibility is just not there. Companies like Steam have been trying to port over a lot of that old software and make it compatible, but they have not yet done Armada.

I wish I had some better news for you but that's the situation you're facing on this one. Just let me know what other questions you may have on this.

Welcome, I am Cory.

I am sorry you are having problems playing this game.

Please try to download and install DOSBox, as it helps older games work on computers now.

You can find it here. - https://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1

Let me know if this works for you.
