So far looks ok
However, I have used Mozilla Thunderbird for several years & before I had these problems, my inbox had some 100 emails
Now the inbox only has some 25 emails covering the last 2 weeks
I suppose that they are not on Yahoo’s server so no way of getting them over to Thunderbird?

No sorry, as you had it set to delete emails from the server, I set it up as imap to stop this so only when you delete from Thunderbird is it removed fro the server
