My company was incorporated on the 12th September 2013

Resolved Question:

Hi
My company was incorporated on the 12th September 2013 and started trading in mid october 2013.
It ceased trading in October 2014 and has been dormant since then.
For corporation tax purposes what time periods do I submit for.
I presume I do 12 months, so period 1st October 2013 to 30th Sep 2014.
but for the second period do I just submit 1st October 2014 to 30th April 2015?
or is there something else i need to do for a dormant company when completing a final CT submission?
Thanks
James

Hi James
Thanks for your question
You will have two filing periods - one for the first 12 months of trading so from 12/09/2013 to 11/09/2014 and then from 13/09/2014 to 12/09/2015014 - as you then became dormant -
If you then have informed HMRC that your company will be dormant fully for the next filing period (from 12/09/2015 to 11/09/2016) then they should not send a notice to file (but if they do then just file a NIL return on the basis you are dormant)
You can however submit ones et of accounts which you should do with the first return and then explain why there are no accounts to accompany the second return (or split them if you prefer so each return has its own accounts)
I have added a link here for you from gov.uk website that covers this topic in more detail for you.
https://www.gov.uk/corporation-tax-accounting-period
At this stage you are late with the first corporation tax return so do get this filed and with HMRC as soon as possible.
Thanks
Sam

Hi Sam

just to confirm the dates again as in your reply you have said 'trading' and then used the incorporation date.

The company was incorporated on 12th Sep 2013, we started paying expenses on the 15th October 2013 and we billed our first invoice on 30th October 2013. Which date does our CT start from?

Thanks

James

Hi James
You start from the date you incorporated - which was 12/09/2013 - so your first accounting period would be from 12/09/2013 to 11/09/2014
Thanks

the HMRC website says ct filled 9 months after financial year end.

so that would that not be by the 12th June 2015?
