If I rent a skip from a Skip Hire company do I have to pay

Resolved Question:

If I rent a skip from a Skip Hire company do I have to pay VAT on the skip permit they provide (given I don't pay VAT on the permit if I get it direct from the Local Authority).

Hello,You are correct, VAT is not payable on skip permits if you pay the council direct, but will be if recharged through the skip company assuming they are VAT registered. The answer is yes. In practise, when a skip company arranges a permit on your behalf they will tend to add a mark-up on the skip permit price to cover their admin costs.

Can't the Skip Hire company simply re-invoice me for the exempt supply of the skip permit without a mark-up and not charge me VAT?

Generally no.
