I have a Toshiba C303 tv. I am trying to connect a Sonos sound

I have a Toshiba C303 tv. I am trying to connect a Sonos sound system via the digital audio output on the rear of the tv.
When I connect it the sound system says there is no signal.
In the handbook it says the output is always active but in another part it says it is only active when the DTV mode is active.
A the moment I have it connected through my SKY box and it works perfectly, unfortunately this dose not help on DVD playback.
Can you advise if this digital output is on the whole time and if it is why can I nor teceve any signal.
