Hi, I have an LG DVD recorder /player which is almost 18 months old. The unit has now refused to format a DVD. Please advise what might be the cause of the problem. I have cleaned the DVD unit with a cleaning disk but it did not solve the fault. Thank you for your time. Terence McDonald

Are you saying you cleaned the disc or the player?

WIll the unit still play back prerecorded discs?

So you cleaned the recorder (cleaning disc, not a disc cleaner)

Nathan :

This type of problem is often caused by a contaminated laser lens. You can attempt to clean it by blowing out the disc tray/slot area with a can of compressed air for dusting computers (keep the can upright only so you don't get chemical propellant on the lens), since the initial cleaning disc didn't work.

Nathan :

Depending on the disc you used, there is another specific one I'd suggest, which works better than most in my experience: http://amzn.to/1w1eNgB

Failing both of these options the last step is to unplug power at the mains for 5+ minutes, and/or look in the LG setup menu for a factory reset/restore function.

Nathan :

If none of these steps help, then this is a hardware fault, which would most likely be a bad laser emitter or pickup (specifically, the write laser, which can fail even while the read laser continues to function). Any of these issues would require repair/replacement.

Nathan :

In general, this type of system usually isn't worth repairing. You'd be looking at having the RAM drive replaced, which is about a £180 job on average (diagnostics, parts, and labor). Which is about the same amount you'd spend to buy a whole new system with a fresh warranty.

Nathan :

Give the above cleaning/resets a try though, and if needed I can help with finding a repair shop or recommending replacement options for you.

Yes, I understand. This is a pretty sure sign that the write laser has failed (though the read laser continues to operate). Please review my earlier instructions/explanation, and let me know the results.

I attempted to format new shop bought blank DVDs with five different units and none of then would format. They are the same disks I have been using for the last 8 months with no problems. The unit will not record on blank DVD-RW so that I may make a disk of a program recorded on the units' HD. It will play a disk produced by a record Company professionally produced and sold in record stores.
