I am thinking of buying a UE48 JU7500, or a UE48 JU7000

Customer Question

Hello,
I am thinking of buying a UE48 JU7500, or a UE48 JU7000 TV.
I am hard of hearing so need to use headphones, but my family also watch TV with me but without headphones.
Please can you tell me if I can connect headphones to the TV without muting the speakers?
Thank you,
Martin Farrer.

Hello and sorry you're having problems.
Unfortunately, all current model TV's mute the speakers when the sound is set to output from the audio output jacks, since the only way to send sound from the outputs is to turn OFF the TV speakers in the audio menu.
However there is a workaround, and this would entail purchasing a small external powered speaker, and connecting both the TV and the headphones to the TV using the optical output, or headphone output on the TV.
Doing this basically still mutes the TV's speakers, but allows the sound to pass both through the speaker and the headphones at the same time.
If you need suggestions on a speaker, or more information on how to do this, let me know.

Thank you Aric.

I will be getting a soundbar or soundbase in any case, so would this allow the workaround?

If so, can you recommend a soundbar which will allow this?

Also you say "and connecting both the TV and the headphones to the TV using the optical output".

What do you mean by connect the tv to the tv?

Thanks,

Martin.

Sorry, I meant "connect the soundbar and headphones to the TV"- not the TV to the TV.
A soundbar would be a suitable workaround, and any current soundbar that supports optical audio will work (which is practically all of them), but a good suggestion would be at the link below:
http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd-blu-ray/dvd-blu-ray-home-cinema/home-cinema-systems-sound-bars/samsung-hw-j250-2-2-sound-bar-10124514-pdt.html
Then a small optical to analogue converter will be needed in order to connect the headphones to. You will need to split the optical cable to both the soundbar and the converter using a small optical splitter (so that there are now two separate optical feeds running out of the TV).
Here is the converter:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/digital-to-analogue-audio-converter-a14kf
Then a total of three optical cables, and the optical splitter below:

It may seem a little cryptic as posted above, but it's rather easy once you see the components. I'll try to simplify and elaborate both below:
From Samsung TV "Digital Audio Out" port------>Optical cable----->Optical splitter.
Optical splitter gives you TWO optical output ports.
1) connects directly to soundbar.
2) connects to Optical converter-------->headphones plug into optical converter.
If you need further assistance let me know. Please do not forget to click a POSITIVE RATING before you go- as it's how I am credited for my work. You can follow up at any time, at no additional cost.

Hello again, I got a better answer from Samsung for free.

Just connect my headphones to the optical output through an optical/analogue converter, and my family can still listen to the TV speakers which won't be muted.

So no external speaker required.

Regards,

Martin.
