Im 60 years of age. I complained of my inability to hold back

Resolved Question:

I'm 60 years of age. I complained of my inability to hold back my urine and I was told it is called urgency as a result of prostrate enlargement. On further examination and tests I was told I need a TURP surgery. My questions:

1 What risk is involved in carrying out a TURP operation?

2 Is this a common day to day surgery like removing cataract in the eye?

3 What is the patient recovery rate on this procedure?

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

TURP operation is relatively safe.

Dr. David :

but there are risks for causing retrograde ejaculation

Dr. David :

or urinary incontinence if too much prostate tissue is removed.

Dr. David :

it is a common surgery like cataract surgery.

Dr. David :

most patients recover in a few weeks.

Dr. David :

you might need to go home with a foley catheter for a day or so, but usually this is removed and patients are able to urinate fine in a day or so.

Dr. David :

TURP surgery cuts out the pathway of the urine and enlarges the flow passage so the urine has an easier time to flow out of the bladder.

Dr. David :

There is still an outstanding question not yet answered. How much does an average TURP operation cost
Expert:  Dr. David replied 3 years ago.
a TURP procedure cost anywhere from 10k to 30k depending on where it is done and pricing around the counter. pricing for surgical procedures can vary greatly depending on where in the country you are and your insurance.

What is 10 k or 30 k ? Could you give an approximate cost in United States Dollar? Thanks.
Expert:  Dr. David replied 3 years ago.
the cost varies depending where you have the surgery, which hospital you have it at, if you qualify for charity care at the hospital, and what insurance you have.

it is best to ask your doctor and hospital to give you cost estimates prior to the surgery. this will be more accurate for you.

the cost can vary between 10k up to $30,000 US dollars.

there is not one cost for this surgery all over the USA.
