Customer Question

We have a hamster who will be 2 in August. We came back from a weeks holiday, a friend has been looking after him and he is not his usual self. His fur on his head is disappearing and one eye is barely open. He does not use his wheel so much at night, sleeping more than he usually does. Do you have any advice without seeing him?

DR.J :

Hi , I'm James DVM MRCVS and would like to help you with your question

DR.J :

Hi, sorry to hear about Cookie

DR.J :

By the sound of it he is not doing very well.

DR.J :

is he eating at all , how are his motions ?

JACUSTOMER-5ob8l9ed- : It appears he is eating but I don't know about his motions
DR.J :

That is already a good sign

DR.J :

are there any scabs on his head ? is there any discharge from his eye?

DR.J :

when you look at the bold patch , does is seem symmetrical , or more local like ?

DR.J :

sorry for all the questions , i'm trying to better have a view of the situation

DR.J :

I can see you are off line.

DR.J :

when you choose to come back , I shall be more then happy to help you

JACUSTOMER-5ob8l9ed- : no scabs on his head. Do not see any discharge from his eyes
DR.J :

Hi .

DR.J :

thanks for getting back to me

DR.J :

There are a number of possibilities as to what is happening with Cookie and sadly all will require veterinary attention .

DR.J :

Cookie is not a young Hamster anymore and it could be any of the below

DR.J :

1. bacterail /viral infection

DR.J :

2. endocrine disease - meaning one of his glands which produce hormones is over/under active

DR.J :

3. Vitamin deficiency - lack in vitamins such as B vitamin group might lead to signs presenting .

DR.J :

4. as well , it could be that it all started with an eye infection or something getting cought in the eye , Cookie was very uncomfortable and in his attempts to get rid if , was rubbing his head against the cage wall or with his paw - resulting in the balding.

DR.J :

What I suggest you do is visit your vets , he can look into cookies eye and see if there is wound there or an ulcer of any sort . can give cookie some pain relief if that is the problem.

DR.J :

As well you can supplement Cookie with some vitamins by adding to his diet high quality morning cereal, ones that have high bran concentration and have no sugar at all (on the back of the box it would say vit B group conc - choose the highest one)

DR.J :

Your vet may choose to give cookie some antibiotics as well.

DR.J :

I know you wished for a simple home solution but Cookie does seem to be in pain and as such I would advice you to have him looked at and his eye sorted.

DR.J :

I hope I have helped you with your questions .

DR.J :

Please don't hesittate to ask anything else .

DR.J :

if you found our conversation helpful - please don't forget to rate it .

DR.J :

Many thanks
