Customer Question

Hi, A swallow flew into my window about 2 hours ago. fluttering around but easy enough to catch. wings don't appear damaged as it can fold them okay. it's now very dark here. should I attempt to release it tonight or wait until morning?

DR.J :

Hi , I'm James DVM MRCVS and would like to help you with your question

DR.J :

The prognosis for the swallow depends on the sort of injury it sustained .

DR.J :

It might be that he suffered a sever head trauma which would result in ireversable damge to the brain tissue in which case he would need to be put down.

DR.J :

What I recommend you do is the following :

DR.J :

Place him in a warm, quite and dark environment with access to water.

DR.J :

and let him rest overnight . If there is no improvement by tomorrow , get him down to the local vets (they will not charge you anything) so they can assess him and if not well , can put him down .

DR.J :

If you think the extent of his injury is very sever , then I would advise seeing the vet still tonight to prevent any further suffering.

DR.J :

I hop this helps

DR.J :

Do you wish to ask any more on the subject ?

JACUSTOMER-g398qy05- :

just a dish of water?

DR.J :

Yes , as flat as possible

DR.J :

so to prevent him drowning

JACUSTOMER-g398qy05- :

will it need to have heat available all night or will room temp suffice?

DR.J :

If you wrap him up in a warm piece of clothing , and keep him indoors , that shall be enough

JACUSTOMER-g398qy05- :

ok, thanks

DR.J :

my pleasure

DR.J :

if you have anymore you wish to ask , please let me know

DR.J :

I wish the little man best of luck .

DR.J :

and please before leaving the chat , do not forget the rate it :)

DR.J :

cheers
