my budgie is scratching and rubbing his head against objects

Customer Question

my budgie is scratching and rubbing his head against objects like cuttle fish. I have placed white paper beneath his perch and inanimate black specks are falling onto the paper when he grooms.
Can you advise if this is some form of skin/feather infestation or the droppings from this type of parasite?
Thank you
Valerie

knstrand :

Hello, I'm a small animal veterinarian and will try to help answer your question about Beauty.

knstrand :

Yes, these black specs are likely to be mite feces.

knstrand :

The mites themselves would be fleshy colored - have you thumbed through his feathers to see if you can visualize mites.

knstrand :

I would suggest a visit with your local avian veterinarian for diagnosis/treatment. Bring Beauty's regular cage to the visit if possible (i.e. it's not too large)

knstrand :

This will allow your vet to look in the cage crevices where mites can hide.

knstrand :

Typically we need to treat these guys with ivermectin

knstrand :

The store bought mite sprays/etc don't work. Hopefully this helps
