we own a white german shepherd and every year around this time

Resolved Question:

we own a white german shepherd and every year around this time his skin becomes itchy. He gets the occasional spot and then irritates it further. Is there a antihistamine we could buy over the chemist counter as we are car less until next week. Help . Regards Leisa

DR.J :

Hi , I'm James DVM MRCVS and would like to help you with your question

DR.J :

Sorry to hear about Zain's itching .

DR.J :

I can help you in regards XXXXX XXXXX to but for the meantime but I would advise to see your vet for this itching can be something seasonal or even something in his food which might be causing it - furthermore I dont want him to develop a "hotspot" at this location he is itching so you need to be careful

DR.J :

what you can get from your local Boots would be a drug called ' Piriton'

DR.J :

It usually comes in 4mg tablets and you don't need a prescription for it .

DR.J :

In regards XXXXX XXXXX use the following :

Customer:

hi, we have put a collar on him at present as hes chomping on his hind leg. He had a small spot and has irritated it. this is an on going thing. Yes he does have a hotspot but this is not the area.

DR.J :

give a 4 mg tablet every 8 hours to begin with .

DR.J :

if he is still itchi you can double the dose to 8mg at but no more

DR.J :

This might make him somewhat sleepy so don't be worried

DR.J :

You can always keep a stock handy when you need them

DR.J :

I hope this helps

Customer:

he is quite a lively large german shepherd. not over weight but big. but hes really not happy with collar on hes sulking.

Customer:

thank you I really appreciate your time.

DR.J :

my pleasure . if you have any further questions , do ask

DR.J :

I will do my best to answer .

DR.J :
