My 23 year old arab gelding get mud fever. Over the last 3

Customer Question

My 23 year old arab gelding get mud fever. Over the last 3 years he has had it very badly, the only thing that worked were turnout boots. He lives out in the summer (hates being in)
and has again developed mud fever. The field he is in is not muddy, but the rainy weather brings it on. I noticed that whenever he gets crusty skin lesions they are at exactly the same areas as previously. It does not vary at all. So my question is: Is the bacteria dormant in his skin, and would topical or systemic antibiotica help? I can't keep him in at night as he gets too distressed. I have put boots back on but don't think that can be a permanent solution.
Otherwise he is fit and healthy and I ride him few times/week.
