Hi, We have a young Bluebelle hen who is just 6 months old.

Customer Question

Hi, We have a young Bluebelle hen who is just 6 months old. She started laying 6 weeks ago, small eggs daily at first, but now she has started to lay some soft shelled eggs. Yesterday she laid a perfect egg in her nest box first thing, but then in the evening she suddenly dropped a soft shelled egg, without warning, outside the next box in her pen - today no egg at all. We are feeding her a diet of layers crumbs, with mixed grit which includes oyster grit, and a small half spoon of Poultry Spice daily She also has calcium additive in her drinking water and occasionally cider vinegar. Our other hen, an 8 year old Friesian, is on the same diet and lays a perfect little white egg every other day. Please could you advise on this problem? Best regards, ***** *****

I confirm that Bluebell lays a perfect egg one day at her usual mid-morning laying time, and the next day she lays an overnight/early morning, very soft shelled egg in her bedroom accommodation.

(She is not retaining these eggs long enough and releasing them before a proper shell is formed.)

What is the reason for this please?
