Customer Question

Hi,
We have a family of three kids ranging from 8.5 to 3.5. We're considering getting a dog and I was wondering whether a Belgian Malinois would be a good family pet. We live in the countryside so have plenty of places to walk with the dog. Temprament with the kids is the major concern

Hello, I'm Dr. Bob.
Your question is an excellent one. While there are many breeds of dog who would fit your family situation, the Belgian Malinois would be a particularly fine choice. It would be most helpful to meet the parents of your intended puppy prior to purchase, to get a good idea of what their personalities are as a likely forecast of the puppy's would be wen grown. If you're dealing with a large-scale breeder, question them as to their philosophy in breeding. Some breeders aim for herding abilities over personality and others breed for companionship traits.
Take your kids with you when you visit the breeder to be sure the adult dogs do well with them. Some dogs are fine with adults, but may be aggressive toward or fearful of children. The dogs should act calm and friendly, and not rough or rambunctious, with you and your children. This is an excellent breed, but individuals can vary greatly within the different breeds, so don't make a decision to buy only on what you read about them. Go and do your research in person at the breeder if at all possible. Hopefully, you'll get a confident, loyal, intelligent dog who will be protective of your children without being excessively aggressive. This is an extremely intelligent breed that loves to be trained to work. If you should have further questions, please feel free to ask.
Kind regards, *****
