Resolved Question:

Hi there my cats had an abscess from an infected scratch from fighting about 2 weeks ago. I took her the vets and he removed the scab and pus and she then took antibiotics for 3 days. The wound is totally healed and she is fine in her self but i can still feel a lump under the skin. I think it may have got bigger but i'm not sure. Does she need to go back to the vets?

Dr. Susan :

Hi, I can help you with your question today.

Dr. Susan :

Yes, I am concerned about that lump. That is not a normal healing response after an abscess.

Dr. Susan :

I'm surprised she was only on antibiotics for 3 days.

Dr. Susan :

I generally keep the pet on antibiotics for about 14 days.

Customer:

Right so she needs to go back to vets?

Dr. Susan :

Yes, I think that's the best idea for her.

Customer:

what shall i do if he says he's only going to give 3 days of antibiotics again?

Dr. Susan :

I would simply request a longer course. Perhaps you could let him know you would feel more comfortable with it and that it will give you peace of mind.

Dr. Susan :

Have you used this particular vet for a long time?

Dr. Susan :

If not, you could mention that another pet of yours was treated for something similar with a longer course of medication.

Customer:

No its the first time she's needed to go to he vets

Customer:

ok thanks for the advice, i'll take her tomorrow

Dr. Susan :

You're welcome! Let me know if you have any further questions. I am happy to continue until you receive the service you seek.

Customer:

great thanks

Dr. Susan :
