Resolved Question:

Hi, I have had my cat since I I was nine. She is now 14 and isn't the car she used to be.
She is getting greedy, be comeing lame in her hind legs and doesn't jump on the sofa anymore.
I fear it may be athiritus and as cats are good at hiding that they're in pain I feel she may be in agony.
Is there anything I can do too help medicate her (without using drugs or manefractured suplimemts) to help ease the pain and help the treatment.
Or if there's any massarges too help ease pain.
Thank you.
Rosie.

Hello Rosie, I'm Dr. Deb.I recently came online and see that your question about Penny hasn't been answered. I'm so sorry that you've had to wait for a response, but if you still need assistance, I'd like to help if I can. I'm sorry for this concern for Penny. You're absolutely correct that cats are masterful at hiding things but if she were in tremendous pain, she wouldn't be moving at all. So, while I think it's safe to say she probably does have some arthritis, it's not the debilitating kind. Options to treat cats medically for this condition are somewhat limited (unlike for dogs) so even if you'd were seeking a medical answer, there's not many drugs which can be given to cats long-term.However, there are alternative options such as laser, acupuncture and hydrotherapy which wouldn't require anesthesia and can be quite effective for many patients. I know hydrotherapy may sound odd to you since many cats don't like water but you might be surprised how many appear to enjoy the experience so I wouldn't completely rule it out. Personally, I do recommend joint supplements for these patients although I can understand why you'd want to go a more natural route. However, if you have a source for glucosamine and chondroin sulfate which you trust, perhaps you could start her on that product. I've seen a number of patients do well on them since they can help to prevent progression of disease. I hope this helps although, again, my apologies for the delayed reply. Deb
