Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with your wee one today.

If you are seeing fishy dark liquid around her anus, this is most likely to be normal anal gland material. Dogs should express these glands as they pass stool (as it puts their scent on their stool), but sometimes if a dog strains a bit too much or is caught by surprise, these can be expressed without the passing of stool.

So, in this case, as long as she isn't sore in this area and we aren't seeing pus or blood with this discharge; we'd not be worried here at all. We'd just want to clean this away and monitor her passing stools, but this material is normal (and always does look dark and smells quite unpleasant and fishy) and nothing abnormal.

I hope this information is helpful.

If you need any additional information, do not hesitate to ask!

All the best,

Dr. B.
