Mylo has just been diagnosed he is on prednislone and antibiotics I would like to know what I can do to help his condition.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. Anemia can be tough, but if it's caught early and the right treatment is given, the outlook is usually good. The role of diet in Mylo's recovery is not insignificant, but it's not going to make or break the situation for him, either. Most dogs with anemia have a poor appetite. How is Mylo's?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

OK at the moment but the vet has said he will feel hungry because of the steroids

Expert:  Dr. Jo replied 2 years ago.
Good. I'm really glad to hear his appetite is okay. Can you please tell me what his current diet is? Also, while we're chatting, I want to be sure you have the links to the following websites. They provide a lot of really good information about dogs with anemia. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?A=1390http://id3424.securedata.net/peppypaws/IHMA&AIHA.htmlhttp://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/

He is on a hypoallergenic high quality food he is slightly overweight dry kibble

Expert:  Dr. Jo replied 2 years ago.
Thank you for the reply. Because Mylo is already on a special diet for a separate medical problem, it really doesn't make any sense to change his diet to help him fight the anemia. You don't want to do anything that might make him his allergies flare up. (typing more)
Expert:  Dr. Jo replied 2 years ago.
Rest assured there is ample nutrition in the diet you are currently feeding in order to help him recover from his anemia. There is a misconception among many people that eating certain things (like iron) treats anemia because you become anemic because certain things (like meat) are lacking in your diet. This is NOT the case for Mylo. He isn't anemic because anything was lacking from his diet. Adding something to his diet will NOT help him make more red blood cells. What he needs in order to not be anemic is to have whatever is causing him to lose or destroy his red blood cells stop. Then his body will naturally catch up.

Does that make sense the way I explained it?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Is there any suplimentsfor that would be good for him basically anything that could help his condition

Expert:  Dr. Jo replied 2 years ago.
Yes, there are two in particular that would not be contraindicated with his hypoallergenic diet that could be very helpful with his recovery. I would recommend using Welactin and Immune One. Let me find you a link.
Expert:  Dr. Jo replied 2 years ago.
Here is Welactin. It's combination of omega fatty acids and antioxidants would be very helpful in Mylo's situation.http://www.amazon.com/Nutramax-Welactin-Nutritional-Supplement-Liquid/dp/B001FB6ECQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1442176779&sr=8-1&keywords=welactin

And here's a link to Immune One. The powder is the product you want. http://www.immuneone.com/order/
Expert:  Dr. Jo replied 2 years ago.
I know you're in a tough situation, but with close and careful work with your veterinarian, I'm encouraged Mylo will pull through. Please remember you can return to this page at any time to review this information and/or post more. The links about anemia I included above should be really helpful. Is there anything else I can help you with today?

How do they work also when giving prednislone do they have to be given with food

Expert:  Dr. Jo replied 2 years ago.
Both are designed to be added on top of or mixed in with the food. Welactin is an oil that you can add directly to the top of the kibble. Immune One is a granular powder that can be mixed in with the food. Both are okay to give with antibiotics and with prednisone. As always, though, it is still important to let your vet know about any supplements you are giving.
