Hi, I can help you with your question today.

We can see head shaking for several reasons. An ear infection is one possibility - and this does typically have some discharge. However, a dog's ear has a vertical portion of the canal as well as a horizontal portion of the ear canal.

It is not possible to see down into the horizontal canal without an otoscope. He may have an ear infection that isn't clearly visible by looking with your eye. He may also have some sort of irritant in the ear which could be seen and removed by your local vet.

Another possibility would be a problem in the brain or inner ear. A tumor would be possible at his age as well. I recommend having him evaluated by your local vet. I would start with a physical and careful otoscopic exam. They should take samples from his ears to look at under the microscope as well. Hopefully these will be enough to diagnose his condition so we can begin a treatment plan.
