My cat's stomach has swollen up, sticking out from below each

Resolved Question:

My cat's stomach has swollen up, sticking out from below each side of his ribcage. He isn't crying in pain or anything, and he looks well enough, but he has become very fussy about what he will eat, and he has had diaorrhea a couple of times. He is about 14 or 15 years old.

You're likely to be seeing an abdominal effusion - a collection of fluid in Smokey's abdominal cavity. This usually occurs as a result of right-sided heart failure, a lack of albumin in his blood due to a poorly functioning liver unable to produce enough albumin or loss of albumin through his urine or bowel, or inflammation in his abdominal cavity due to infection or neoplasia (cancer). Smokey's vet will want to perform a thorough physical exam on Smokey paying particular attention to his heart. Diagnostics in the form of blood and urine tests as well as an analysis of a small sample of the fluid should clarify why an effusion has arisen. Effusions always indicate serious disease. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
