Customer Question

Hi. I have misread my dog's metrobactin 250mg dose. I have given him 6 tablets in 27 hours, instead of 3. Should I be concerned/ do anything? He seems fine, no vomiting etc, but has only ingested the last 2 about 15 minutes ago.

How much does Sasha weight, please? Metronidazole (Metrobactin) can be dosed in a wide range of 15-50 mg/kg although most recommend not exceeding 15 mg/kg twice daily. I regret that my state board of veterinary examiners doesn't allow me to speak to customers by phone in this venue but other experts in this category may be able to assist you in this regard. Please let me know if you'd like another expert to do so and I'll opt out of this conversation. Please stay in the conversation if you wish.

He probably weighs a little over 19 kilograms now. The packet says 250mg - so isn't the recommended does way over what you are saying, let alone what I've given him?!?

Bad maths - 285 x twice a day for his weight I think you are saying?! He has had 1710 in 27 hours, instead of 855

I ordinarily would dose Sasha at 15 mg/kg twice daily or ~300 mg twice daily. 1500 mg (6 x 250 mg tablets)/19 kg in a 24 (27 actually) hour period is ~79 mg/kg and that can cause symptoms of acute overdose such as anorexia, vomiting, depression, mydriasis (wide open pupils), nystagmus (eyes flicking back and forth), ataxia ("drunken sailor"), head-tilt, deficits of proprioception (not knowing where one's limbs are in space), joint knuckling, disorientation, tremors, seizures, slow heart rate, rigidity, and stiffness. These dogs usually improve within 1-2 days once the drug has been discontinued...and it should be in Sasha for at least a couple of days. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
