Customer Question

Hi, I have an old sony CCD-TR305E camcorder that I am trying to convert tapes to DVD. However, the sound output is intermittent on one channel and has gone on the other. Sometimes it works for a whole tape then it won't work for a few days then it does!! Can it be repaired, please?

Hello, my name isXXXXX be happy to assist you.
Please allow me to ask you a few questions about your camcorder so that we can troubleshoot the issue.

- Does sound problem occur on same tape that was playing fine before?
- Does picture stay normal while sound goes out in playback?

Thanks.

Happens on all tapes I have. Picture is fine

Thanks Ray for the reply.

So sound goes out intermittently even if that tape played fine previously on this camcorder, is this correct?

- Have you tried to run video head cleaning tape in camcorder?

[please note that picture and sound reads out on tape with same drum (video head assembly) in this camcorder]

No, I do not have a video8 tape cleaner. The problem seems to be with the connections. When I move the leads the sound changes from nothing to OK! I have got 4 tapes to work OK, but then the sound goes out again.

OK, have you tried to use another AV cord to see if sound issue is due to cracked/ broken wire?

Thanks.

I tried another camera with the same new leads and sound was fine but picture was no good. That is why I am trying to get this one to work as picture is good and sound OK when it wants to work. It is not working at the moment. Can it be fixed?

We need to confirm either problem is with in camcorder or due to connecting AV cord to answer the question so please connect camcorder to TV as test with another AV cord, playback a tape and check sound and picture appear normally?
Then wiggle the cord to see if sound or picture goes out or stay normal.
This test will tell us the problem origin.

Thanks.

The video grabber leads are new and I have had the same problem when connected to TV with camera leads, so I know the fault is in the camera. At the moment I am connected to PC for DVD work, but I had the same sound problems when reviewing tapes on TV. It is definitely the camera or connections in camera.

Thanks Ray for confirmation that problem is in camera.

Video-8 camcorder utilize same video head to read video and sound signal from tape so clogged video head can cause either sound or video distortion that trigger the mute circuit respectively to stop video or sound output during distortion in signal so I would recommend to use V8 head cleaning tape that might help to resolve the problem.

If cleaning tape doesn't help then there are two possible causes of problem that I have come across so far in these camcorders, either bad capacitors on main processor board of camera that need to be replaced (requires disassemble of camera and soldering work to replace bad capacitors) or tape path adjustment is needed (adjusting tape guides slightly to get correct track on video head scanning) that also need handy person to do that work.

I'm sorry both above options are not user level repair and local camera tech will do this to avoid any damage to camcorder.

I trust my input will help you out. Please feel free to respond if you have any additional questions.
A positive rating to answer would be greatly appreciated!
Regards,

Shahid.
