thanks for the inquiry. I have resolved the problem myself. It was setting the camera to 'set-ok' when the menu came up on the LCD. It was very unclear in-camera but trial and error (and frustration) meant I finally pressed a button that cleared the screen and allowed the online firmware upgrade to have access.
