PS please let me know if you can cum up with an answer
Lasers fail for 2 reasons
1 internal failure of the laser of the sensor array the laser is reflected back and picked up by six sensors wich position the laser for proper read...a failure of one of the six and the unit can no longer focus or track
Dust builds up inside the laser head and under the lens on the prism inside this lowers the the effective output until it reaches a point where it no longer can function ..
since the dust is UNDER the lens you cant clean it
without dissasembly of the laser head and you cant do that becuase you will never get it back together
I have had limited success with compressed air under the laser lens ...
and sometimes if its on the hairy edge you can turn up the laser power with the pot on the laser to give it just a little more works in case where the laser is a little weak and not reading reliably but works
3. cracked gears
that move the sled down the line as the data is read the motor moves 1/4 turn to track the laser into the disc and a cracked or dirty gear willl cause it to stick and not read you can watch the laser read it will spin 1/4 turn every few secs if it stops it will soon mistrack as the laser reaches the end of its play inside the housing and no longer the read the data without moving the sled ...the servo will send a harder pulse becuase it knows it needs to move that thing and sometimes if it breaks free will cause an overshoot and the unit will stop playing /rec and reorganize it self back to where it should be .. this results in a drop out
Good luck ! also be sure the little solder blob across the laser has been removed or it wont work
