Hello my name is***** look forward to assisting and am very sorry to hear that you are having this problem.
I want to warn you that it is possible you will need to replace a part in order to fix this.
There are a few different things that can cause this and a couple different parts so we would need to troubleshoot to find out for sure.
Is the lens stuck extended right now?
.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Yes it is

.
Look directly at the lens is it leaning slightly more to one side instead of being completely centered?
.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Seems centered but notice lens cover (top half) is showing slightly although lens is stuck extended.

That could mean you need a new part then, just in case lets check anyway.
While holding the power button gently push the lens to the side.

Test this with each of the 4 sides, if it is off center to one side doing this should get it to retract while holding the power button.
If you hear a click while doing it do not worry that is normal.

If this did not work please come back and let me know by clicking on reply to expert so we can continue.
If it did work please don’t forget to leave a positive rating it is greatly appreciated.

Tested each of 4 sides and lens has retracted .Now wont reopen.Tries to open three times with lens cove opening halfway for both top and bottom the retracts and the system error zoom message appears.

Darn that is not a good sign, retracting is good but it should have opened properly after. How old is it?
.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

I think 2009

I was hoping it was more recent and that you had an extended warranty. The zoom unit is what extend and retracts the lens. On your model it is integrated into the lens itself so in order to replace it you need to replace the entire lens. The part for this model costs about £40, for about the same price you can get a used replacement of the same model. I personally would do that because other parts do tend to fail on these like the LCD screen. So it would be good to already have replacement parts. Please also note if you find the ZR1 they use the same parts as the ZX1 and are pretty much the same camera. If you have any questions at all click on reply to expert and let me know. If not please don’t forget to leave a positive rating for my help - it is greatly appreciated. Please note you are rating me only not this site or your Lumix.

For that price and the risk of further probs I guess I will go for a replacement .Pity as we have travelled well together over the years. Thanks for your advice .I feared it may be terminal.

I sincerely ***** ***** could have given you better news. I would however recommend Lumix cameras as I use them myself but they all tend to eventually get this problem. Can you recommend a replacement. I was pleased with this one as it was so easy to use.

Sure this is the type I bring with me everywhere, I leave it in my center console in my car: Click Here It should also have a little better picture quality than your old camera. I prefer LEICA lenses myself so if you do not go with that I would suggest just making sure it has that listed. If you have any questions at all click on reply to expert and let me know.
