I have checked the firmware and the one installed on my dvd player is 1.2 and the version in Update Information section is 1.1. So I assume I have the updated version?

Yes you do,
You said you recorded from TV to a disk, on what exactly did you record on?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

I recorded a tv programme from terrestrial TV to a blank disc (dvd-RW) on my DVD recorder. I have done this for ages now and have never had this problem.

Go to Settings, and choose Shipping Conditions
This will return it to new, reloading the firmware.
Once done, try to first record a disk then try to play it.

I did the above and recorded a programme from TV. I managed to play it back. All well I thought. I switched off unit from switch on DVD and switched on again to check. Again the message displayed "unsupported" and U81 on the display.

Thanks Pam, it confirms the error
Its the Lens unit that's faulting
A corrupted firmware can cause this. But we have ruled this out by trying to reinstall it.
I am really sorry about this and you are going to have to return the recorder to have the Lens replaced. It will be covered by the warranty if this has not expired, and the repair will be done at no cost to you.
I am really sorry about this, and if you have problems, or would like any additional information or assistance, please do not hesitate to let me know.
And if you can take a second to rate my service, that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
