I have a Panasonic HDC-SD80 video camera, using the HD writer

Customer Question

I have a Panasonic HDC-SD80 video camera, using the HD writer AE 3.0, I'm trying to record the images on to a DVD-RW. However, during the process, I get a message which says
"HD writer has encountered a problem and needs to close".
The computer is Windows XP.

Can you tell me when you where last able to make a DVD with the program please?
Thank you

When I first got the camera I was able to make a DVD, but it hasn't worked for some time, I just keep buying new SD cards.

ThanksHave you tried different DVD's? to make sure its not this disk thats the issue?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Yes I have tried different discs.

The problem message comes while the files are being processed, before the actual DVD is recorded.

Thank you
Can you please close all programs.
Click start, Run and type in CMD and press enter
A black window will open.
Type in it
sfc /scannow
press enter and when it has completed, type in
chkdsk /r
Press enter.
It will give a message "the type of the file system is NTFS cannot lock current drive.
chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts y/n" Say Y, press enter and restart the computer.
Please note, while this normally only takes 10 minutes to run, it can take at times number of hours if windows encounters many issues. If this is occurring it is critical to let this complete as it means you have corruption on the hard drive that it needs to fix. Even if it looks like the scan is not progressing, it is, please just let it run to completion. Windows will then start when it has.
Then try to make a DVD.
Let me know the results please

Richard, sorry for the late response.

I tried to run a scan using your instructions, however, I was repeatedly asked to insert the Windows XP cd. Unfortunately, I can't find it. I've spent the last 2 days searching the house, but no luck.

I still have the camera issue (not your fault) but giving a rating is difficult.

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
ok, it does mean there are issues with your operating system, and this is why you need the disk.
It may be an issue if you cannot find it but we will come back to this if needed.
Complete the instructions I gave please Mike, skipping the SFC /scannow command
Let me know the results please

I followed your instruction, and was able to copy an 8 GB SD card to DVD, which I wasn't able to before.

However, the same problem came back when I tried a 16 GB SD card,

"HD writer has encountered a problem and needs to close".

Prior to this another message came up "Site Adviser has encountered a problem and needs to close", but this didn't stop the copying process.

ok, do the following pleaseClick Start, Run type in MSCONFIG and press enter. Click on the Startup Tab and click Disable All. Click on the Services Tab and click "Hide All Microsoft Services" Then click Disable All Click ok, restart and let me know if you still have the problem

I carried out your instructions, there was a message at the end about being an Administrator.

I tried recording another DVD but I still have the problem.

Do I have to revert back to the original settings?

Unfortunately, I'm going on holiday for two weeks, so won't be available for a while.

Hi Mike,
Are you sure 16GB is just not too large for the DVD as that does exceed its capacity.
