My Panasonic camera DMC-ZS19 keeps giving me the error

Customer Question

my Panasonic camera DMC-ZS19 keeps giving me the error message "System Error (Zoom)" It will not open nor take pictures.

Hello and thank you for your question. I look forward to assisting you today. Does the lens extend when you turn the camera on?
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
No, nor does the lens cap fully close.
Expert:  Dan replied 6 months ago.
Did the camera sustain any damage that you are aware of?
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
I meant the lens shield that closes over the lens.No damage that I am aware of.
Expert:  Dan replied 6 months ago.
Okay. Lay the camera on a flat surface, lens up. Press and hold the shutter button at the same time you power it on and do this for sever cycles. This may help to realign the lens barrel and get the camera working again. Let me know what happens.
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
It only opens and closes when I hold down the shutter button as you suggested, which it did not do before, sometimes several times but it will n ot open and close unless I repeat the action you suggested, otherwise it remains stuck open, and I get the same error message of system error (zoom). Also get message "please turn camera off and on again" Can take pictures, but the zoom does not work.

Does the lens barrel extend at all when you turn the camera on?
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
but only when I hold down the shutter button when turning the camera on, otherwise no. When it is opened this way, if I am not holding down the shutter button, the lens barrel stays in the open position.
Expert:  Dan replied 6 months ago.
Okay, you can try to gently pull the lens barrel out with your fingers in an attempt to realign it. That may get it working again. If not, these types of cameras are not worth repairing so don't spend a lot doing that. You can also try blowing out the lens with a can of compressed air in case there is some dirt or debris lodged around the barrel.

Thank you. Guess this is for the scrap heap.
Expert:  Dan replied 6 months ago.
Maybe, but you can't hurt it more than it is by trying. Make sure you remove your memory card if you decide to get ride of it.
