I'm Greg.
On Volvo cars this type of message appears on dashboard when fault is recorded by ABS or Engine control module.
It means you car suffers from intermittent or permanent fault within ABS system and in order to have more specific information about it You must connect your Volvo to diagnostic equipment.
It is little bit confusing because message says 'Service required' but really there is a fault code to be checked.
After reading fault code You will know area of component has failed.
Example 1.
If one of wheel speed sensors will have a fault it will flag the code.
Replace the sensor and job done.Estimated bill £80-£120.
Example 2.
This Volvos suffer from numerous CAN bus faults, if this is the case I would recommend to give your car to good auto electrician. If ABS module has failed you are looking around £1200 - £1500 repair.
I hope this answers your question.
