This answer was rated:

We have a Zanussi ZDC67550W tumble dryer that has developed an intermittent fault. Sometimes it will stop during a cycle with the Start/Pause butting flashing red and emitting a double beep. Sometimes it won't begin a cycle and produces a straining noise from the motor and also a clicking noise.
When the Start/Pause button is pressed (along with the button to the left) the lights flash green in sequence with the Start/Pause button flashing red once after the Drying button. (That's 8 green flashes then a red flash).
Any help would be appreciated.
Can you double check that error code again please.
As 1 red flash and 8 green isn't an error code.
But there is an 8 red flashes and 1 green flash was it that way round?

Hello Daniel. The red flash comes after the first 8 lights have flashed green in sequence. The remaining lights then flash green one after another and the whole sequence starts again.

Ok try this and see what you get.
Turn the dial to off.
Press and hold the start button and the button to the left again,
Then turn the dial one click clockwise
Once the leds start to flash let go of the buttons.
Now turn the dial 9 clicks clockwise.
Now count the number of red flashes and the number of green and let me know.
Then turn the dial to off then on then back off again.

Hi Daniel.

It produces 5 red flashes then 4 green flashes.

Ok that's error code E54 which is a motor fault. Now there is a capacitor on these that can give this kind of fault so you can try and replace this first. The capacitor is the silver cylinder near the motor with a few wires on it.
But if that doesn't cure it then its going to be a faulty motor here which will need to be replaced and that should get the dryer back up and running again.
If you need anymore info just get back to me.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your response. Do you know how much a new capacitor and also a new motor should cost?

The motor itself is £140 so very expensive but the capacitor is about £20 so a lot cheaper.
