It sounds your washer is in a fault state, which lights are shown on the control panel, and are any flashing?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
none are flashing! it is set on cottons, 60 degree, 1400 spin, quick, the display is showing 0. its as if it has frozen and wont let me reset. have turned it off at the mains and left it for a good 20 mins before switching back on to see if it will restart but to no avail

With the dial at 12 o'clock (off), press and hold down the start button and the button to the left of it, then with the buttons held down rotate the dial one click clockwise.

Please let me know what is shown on the display.

Ok, hold down the Start button and the button to the left of it, keep them held, press and release the on/off button after a few seconds, while still keeping the other two buttons held down.

Wait for power to come on then after 2-3 seconds release the two buttons.

What is shown on the display?

exactly the same as before, has had no effect at all

In that case it sounds like a PCB fault, a replacement PCB, the part is 247A as per diagram here, however this appears to be obsolete.

As such its looking like this unit is beyond economical repair, the last suggest I have to get this working again is to call up D&G and organise a repair and protect plan, they offer a money back guarantee if they can get hold of the parts, further details can be found here, but your looking around £150 if they do repair it, but that includes a further years warranty.
