Hi, I'm looking at buying a 2012 A4 Avant SE 177 bhp multitronic and would like to know how reliable these gear boxes are now or is it a risky purchase with a strong possibility of faults occuring with expensive repairs ?

your're right to be wary as the multitronic gearbox has a poor reputation over the last 10 years

however there was a new design from 2011 which to date seems much better

also with all Audi / VW gearboxes if the gearbox oil is changed every 30K miles then this gives a gearbox a much easier time compared to the OEM reccomendation of 60K miles

so I'd consider this car but also get some fresh fluid in there
