I have an Audi A4 2.4lt V6. Engine Code BDV I think. The auxiliary air pump was running continually until it was disconnected 3 weeks ago. The engine management light has just come on and I am concerned that I might be doing damage to the engine. Is this the case please? Could you also tell me the function of this component and where I might locate any relays relating to the air pump. Most people on Audi forums seem to think that a sticking relay is often the cause of the problem. Local garages are in ignorance!
Thanks for any help.
Regards Rob

The forums are probably correct on this one

under the scuttle panel ( plastic panel where the windscreen wipers are attached) there's a relay panel and the air pump relay is in there

its very prone to failure and corroded pins in its socket so I'd replace that and clean the socket as well

as for the possiblity of engine damage then you won't damage the engine just by having no air pump

but its quite possibly the reason for the check engine light

I'd suggest getting a diagnostic done next as this will point to the issue and help reduce the repair time

Have previously removed trim etc. to gain access to what I thought was the relay on the right hand side of engine bay. All I found was a rectangular electrical box approx. 6 inches square which I assumed was the engine management module. Are the relays in here and could you confirm the function of this air pump please.

Hello the relay box should look like this

Thanks for the reply Matt. Forgive my ignorance but are you saying the relays as shown in your diagram are inside the steel box that I previously found.

Hello Rob

yes thats correct the lid of the box should open up quite easily
