Customer Question

I have a 2008 318d which struggles going up hill slowly, particularly in traffic. Yesterday going up a street hill in traffic it started to struggles in first gear, smelt rubber burning and saw smoke coming out of bonnet. Pulled up, turned off engine, opened bonnet and seemed like overheated. AA guy checked everything could not find problem, fluid levels fine, circulating fine, no leaks, fan working, clutch ok. However, overheated and clear smell of burning. Thought it maybe as riding clutch in traffic (which we all do without problem) and couldn't cope. Strangely same thing happened to another 2008 BMW just after me at same spot! My car left for hour or so to cool, traffic on hill eased and it worked fine and driven well since, though not been on any steep hills in traffic since. What could be the problem?
