bmw x5 e53 2001 petrol 3.0i auto,engine fault light came on,no loss of power,no smoke running perfect,had diagnostic check,light has gone out,do I still have a fault ?

Hopefully i can help..

Depends if the ecu itself on the vehicle picks up the problem again on the engine thats why the engine fault lights comes up as it tells you the ecu has detected a problem with either a sensor/ecu controlled/monitored component on the engine and logs the faults codes accordingly so as to be retrived diagnostically which i see you say has been done and the light has gone out..which usually means either during the testing the fault codes have been cleared "hence the light goes out" or the problem has fixed itself in which you would just use the vehicle as normal..either way since the warning hasnt appeared nor the vehicle shows any performance issues so far then it would be a case of driving the car normally as you have done..if the warning does appear again then you have to find out exactly what the ecu is seeing as faulty "diagnostic test once again" what codes your getting to make further checks as such for it to bring on the engine light..that will be the only forward to prevent it happening again..
