I own a BMW 1 series (118i petrol 5DR step auto N46). Only travelled 54,000 miles.
The dealer noticed a small oil leak from the sump when it was being serviced. They have just quoted 950 pounds to repair. A sump gasket replacement!!
I only use the car occassionaly, maybe a thousand miles a year.
Why does replacing a sump gasket take so much time and expense? As I do so little mileage (there are also no oil deposits on the garage floor) can I leave this repair until the summer?
what is the last 7 digits of the vin of the car?

I will provide an honest answer. I trust this will be appreciated. Please remember that a low rating PUNISHES me for being honest and that I receive nothing for my time until a positive rating is clicked.
this is about a 6 or 7 hour job.
it is so time consuming because the engine needs to be raised and secured into installation position before the oil pan can be removed.
this is why it is so expensive. quoted costs are reasonable.
in terms of waiting, if it is only a slow drip and you keep an eye on oil level, then in theory you should be fine. However, there is no way to predict if it might start leaking more rapidly.
I would always recommend addressing now vs later
Please let me know if you have further questions. Please do not forget to click a positive rating as this is the only way I receive credit for my answer, thank you. Best wishes with your vehicle.

Thanks for your response. Will the replacement of the sump gasket create increased pressures and possibly more problems with the engine later?

No I would not expect increased risk of future issues due to this.
