I have a 2008 BMW520D. My windscreen wipers have failed completely

This answer was rated:

I have a 2008 BMW520D. My windscreen wipers have failed completely twice after running for about 3 hours continuously in intermittent mode. As this was on motorways it is an alarming and unsettling fault. Is this a recognised or common problem. Am taking into my local BMW garage who want to charge me for investigation and I would like to point them in the right direction as past experience with irregular electrical faults is not good.
have you checked/tested anything when the issue is present?

I have not looked at any of the electrics. I have made sure the rain sensor is clear and I have also tried all the other wiper settings. For a while the failure is total, but it does come back if left for a short while.

I will provide an honest answer. I trust this will be appreciated. Please remember that a low rating PUNISHES me for being honest and that I receive nothing for my time until a positive rating is clicked.

a proper BMW shop should be able to diagnose this easily if the issue can be replicated.

if you want to give them guidance, you should have them check the wiper motor first and foremost, as well as the wiper relays.

Please let me know if you have further questions. Please do not forget to click a positive rating as this is the only way I receive credit for my answer, thank you. Best wishes with your vehicle.

I wanted to know if this was a common problem as I have seen some suggestion on BMW forums that it might be. I am concerned about replicating the fault as it arose after several hours of running and my experience with garages and electrical issues has not been good.

Please do not forget to CLICK ON a positive rating. thank you

the answer is no, it is not a common problem.
