I have 09 330d that is very rough on cold starting and smoky

Customer Question

I have 09 330d that is very rough on cold starting and smoky for about 30 seconds. Then it settles and runs OK. Is this a timing chain issue?

What has been checked so far.

Customer: replied 14 days ago.
I had it serviced at the local garage (not BMW) and they said the EGR valve was OK, but it had a "cam rail" fault. The engine warning light stays on although last week I did a run from Edinburgh to Durham and the light was off the whole way. I also gave it a couple of tanks of premium diesel and drove for about 5 miles at 70 mph in 4 gear.

Is it up on mileage.

Customer: replied 14 days ago.
Only 98 000

Check for a diesel drop back issue O rings on fuel lines that have gone hard for example.

Customer: replied 14 days ago.
Could you give a bit more detail on that as I am not sure what you mean by "drop back issue O rings on fuel lines that have gone hard"
Expert:  Gavin Perry replied 14 days ago.

Can you see connections like the one in the image on the fuel lines.

Customer: replied 14 days ago.
Thanks for the picture. How easy is it to access these things and what exactly would I be looking for?
Expert:  Gavin Perry replied 14 days ago.

Fairly easy to get to they have an O ring inside sometimes they can get nipped when refitted or the O rings can go hard.

Expert:  Gavin Perry replied 14 days ago.

They can look like this aswell.

Expert:  Gavin Perry replied 14 days ago.

New one's can be purchased.

Customer: replied 14 days ago.
Are you thinking that there might be a leak because the defective O ring?
