Car driven without or with very little engine oil

Customer Question

Driven my car for 20 minutes without or with very little engine oil. What grade of oil should I put in.. to stand the best chance of protecting engine (if not already damaged) ? Also, do I need to replace oil filter etc ? Car started to make slight knocking noise 1 minute from my home, engine didn't sieze up though and car hasn't been driven since. Engine warning light came on and stayed on for 20-25mins Thank you

Rob, oil light didn't come on.

Hi Matt.
the only time an engine will suffer damage is when the oil light comes on as this tells you there is no pressure so no oil being pumped around the engine.
so there is a good change you have done no damage .
what engine do you have fitted

Hi Matt.
the whole range of engines for you model year takes 5w30 or 10w40 semi synthetic .
oil filter does not have to be changed unless it is due a service.

Rob, did you receive my last question? Please advise what oil is best to use out of 2 you recommended. Also, would this check engine light come on due to lack of oil in car? Could this light indicate a new particulate filter is needed...or is this only needed once car goes into limp mode. Matt

Hi Matt.
sorry for the delay in getting back to you .
you can use either of these oils but my preference would be the 5w30 semi synthetic.
It is possible the check light has come on due to the low level and not oil pressure.
I would recommend that you replenish the engine oil and start it up.
if the light is still on then get back to me for further help.
