1.9 diesel - auto trans - no reverse gear - will go forward. Before I take it to garage, could it be lack of fluid?

if the car drives OK forward with no sudden gear shifting or struggling to accelerate then its unlkley to be a lack of fluid

whats more likley is either a faulty / sludged up solenoid or a broken wire to that solenoid so reverse gear is never being selected

or possibly a faulty gear selector

I'd 1st suggest checking the selector lever linkage / cable under the car for any broken parts and or missing bolts as if this is coming adrift then it can rub on the car body or just bind up

If that’s all OK then check all the electrical connections of the gearbox, remove each connector in turn and spray with contact cleaner. Check that the wiring to the gearbox is in good condition with no chafing or frayed wire

Where do I find the solenoid?

Hello David

the solenoids are inside the gearbox

and are accessed by removing the gearbox sump and filter screens once you've drained the oil

As the solenoid is accessible I do not have to scrap the vehicle.
