Customer Question

I have an Opel corsa 1.2 petrol 1997. The car suddenly cut out one day when I was driving and ive not been able to drive it since. Every time I try to drive the car dies on me. Ive changed the battery to a fully charged one, the car starts just about and after a few mins dies, also when I press the accelerater the car dies straight away. The car was running at idle today I put the headlights on and the car died straight away. I've been told it could be the alternater but if that was the case how come when I put a fully charged battery in the car still sounds like it's struggling, surely the car would run good until the battery just dies. I've checked fuel lines, fuel pump, air filters, fuel filter, I've changed the spark plugs. Could it be the alternater ? I really can't afford to replace this and that not to fix the problem .
Thank you

hello 1st check that the alternator is actually charging the battery in the car by taking a battery voltage reading with the engine off then another with the engine running. The 2nd reading should be higher than the 1st and climbing steadily. And also check that the alternator is secure to the engine as this provides the ground for the charging circuit and make sure that the engine / gearbox earth strap is secure and the contacts are clean and bright. if the alternator appears not to be working - take it to a electrical specialist and ask them to test it as sometimes you can replace just the diode pack and this will repair the alternator without requiring replacement
