This answer was rated:

i received an "alternator workshop" message and red battery symbol
JA: Have you tested the battery with a voltmeter? And can you see if it's leaking or not?
Customer: i don't have the gear and it's not leaking
JA: What is the make/model/year of your car?
Customer: vw passat nov 2005 1.9 TDi Estate
JA: Are you fixing your Passat yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I might if you can tell me what to try. also is this a spurious message?
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: thats all

Sounds like your alternator hasnt got long to go..seen this many times-- this warning is usually always a warning sign of the either the pulley on the alternator is going or the alternator itself..either of the 2 issues will result in a new alternator anyway..nothing you can check other than simply going about asking for quotes locally at any garage you normally use for repairs..and take it from there...also inc a new auxillary serpertine belt whilst your at it
