JA: What is the make/model/year of your car?
Customer: I'm trying to charge a nearly flat battery
JA: Have you tested the battery with a voltmeter? And can you see if it's leaking or not?
Customer: MF14HWO Fabia VRS I have a battery meter and it reads about 3.5. Needs to be about 11 to start engine. Have charged before with no problem but not from such a low reading. Have been away for 3 weeks. Car outside. When I attach charger the dashboard display flashes every few seconds and the hazard lights come on faintly. No leak apparent.
JA: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Just what I've done before. Apply charging grips (red +, black -) and switch on charger.
JA: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: not that I can think of. Maybe new battery needed?

Hi my name is Gavin how long have you had it on charge.

Customer: replied 14 days ago.
I tried for a couple of hours then noticed the flashing so stopped

How old is the battery.

Customer: replied 14 days ago.
same as the car I think. I've not replaced it.

It is getting to the end of its life cycle.

Customer: replied 14 days ago.
does that mean that as it has lost so much charge, it's not recoverable

You could try leaving it on charge for a longer time but the modules start waking up and then going back to sleep that is the part that is not good for the modules. I would replace the battery.
