Aloha! You're speaking with Dr. Michael Salkin
Yes, Piriteze (cetirizene) is safe in cats and dosed at 1mg/kg daily. Piriton (chlorpheniramine) is also safe and dosed at 2mg/cat every 12 hours. The most common of the antihistamines prescribed by dermatologists is diphenhydramine (Benadryl) which is dosed at 2-4mg/kg every 6-8 hours. Depending upon which study we choose to believe, antihistamines are effective in 10-40% of allergic dermtitis cases. Adding fish oil to the diet at a dose of 40mg/kg of the EPA in the fish oil daily has been shown to increase the efficacy of antihistamines but it might take 8-12 weeks for that efficacy to be seen. Steroids are more effective for cats such as Des but I understand your avoiding them in an elderly cat with a heart condition.
